Fleet Hurricanes progress to the Surrey County Cup Final after beating Fleet Bluebirds 3-1

A tense and hard fought game between 2 of Fleets Big Guns took place on Sunday 26th March. The anticipation for this game was immense and it brought in a big crowd.

The match started evenly balance, as was expected, with opportunities at both ends. In the 26th minute, the Hurricanes striker, Lottie, broke through after a piece of individual brilliance and kept her composure to slot one past the Bluebirds keeper, Libby. The keeper was tested once again and pulled off a couple of world-class saves to show her class. The Hurricanes knew it would be a challenge to score again.

The rest of the first have remained tense, with opportunities begging, but the Hurricanes held on to their 1-0 lead going into the break.

The 2nd half started in the same way after some tactical changes on both sides. 15 minutes in saw the Bluebirds create an opportunity with a piece of skill on the right flank to send their Centre Midfield, Sophie through with one player to beat. A great piece of skill tricked the Centre Back and Sophie was clean through to slot past Keeper, Amelie for 1-1.

The tension had just gone up another level. Both teams were knocking the ball around well and were pressing to get ahead. 30 meters out, the Hurricanes Centre Midfield, Sianna, picked up the ball and found herself with room to travel without being challenged. As she approached the Bluebirds box, her quick feet alluded 2 Bluebirds defenders, and she found herself through on goal and slid another past Libby to make it 2-1 Hurricanes with 25 to play.

10 minutes from time, Lottie found another opportunity in front of goal and again, kept great composure to put the Hurricanes 3-1 up with 10 to play. This was a nervous end to the match for the Hurricanes as the Bluebirds were pushing forward to close the gap. An alteration to the Hurricanes strengthened their defensive game, and they hung on to win.

What a great game of football played in respectful manner, which credited Fleet Town Girls & Ladies FC.

The Hurricanes now face Sutton Utd on the 23rd April at Meadow bank. Let's hope they can go one step further this year after losing to Crystal Palace in the final last year.
